They are nocturnal and will normally hide during the day and come out at dusk to explore there viv then return to hiding at dawn. Vivarium set up : Boas can be housed in multiples as long as they are separated when being fed to avoid accidents. A rough guide for the sizes of viv s needed for single snakes are as followed : Hatchlings - length 24 x width 12 x height 18 Adults - 72 x 30 x 24 As boas tend to be large snakes it is usual that a custom viv is required . A cheap way of doing this is to use a wardrobe lying on its side will the doors replaced with glass ones. Be careful not to use unfinished wood as it is difficult to clean and can harbour disease. A suitable substrate such as commercially prepared berk moss or news paper. Do not use seder bark as it is toxic to animals. A hide box, large water bowl for pre shed soaking are essential as well as greenery and branches for climbing which are also recommended. Temperatures : Daytime back ground temperature 80-85 degrees Night time back ground temperature 75-80 degrees both of which are supplied by an under tank heat source. Hot spot temperature supplied at one end of the tank should be a constant 95 degrees supplied by either by ceramic bulb or basking lamp. Food : Boas will eat pre killed defrosted rats, poultry or rabbits of the appropriate size on a weekly or bi- monthly basis. As a general rule you should only feed the snake a food stuff the same diameter as the snake. Snakes that refuse food could either be going through there shed cycle or just need gentle persuasion and persistence, a number of methods can be used to entice them such as braining. Common problems : Include mites and ticks which are easily solved with vet care. Important information : This care sheet does not contain all the necessary information you will need to know about owning a royal python so thoroughly research as much information you can before purchasing one. If you have any problems or questions please don t hesitate to contact me. www.snakes2go@hotmail.co.uk Common name : Boa constrictor or boa for short. Native to : Mexico through south America including the surrounding islands. Adult Size : Usually between 8-12 feet some exceeding this, females generally being the larger. But be warned boas increase in size 300% in the first year reaching 4-5 feet in this time. The following year will add another 3-4 feet to its length, as well as several pounds. After the second year growth rate slows down significantly, but they do continue to grow significantly, during there entire lives. Life span : Between 20-30 years but some have reached up to 48 years in captivity. Young : The live bearing females will give birth to between 10-60 young ( depending upon the subspecies ) after a gestational period of 4-10 months depending upon the temperature and several other factors. The young are between 12-24 inches in length and as thick as your thumb. Appearance : As there are many variety s of subspecies and different morphs a general description can not be given so it is wise to thoroughly research into the ones that you are interested in. Ease of care : These snakes are generally very timid, docile snakes that are relatively easy for beginners to look after although you should take into consideration they do grow very quickly in to large snakes that weigh many pounds. Temperament : They are generally quite shy and docile but if provoked they can become aggreused by insufficient heating and thermal burns caused by exposed surfaces such as unprotected bulbs. Activity period : Boas like most snakes are nocturnal and will remain secluded in there hide box usually coming out at dusk to explore its viv and retreating to its hide at dawn. Shedding information : They occasionally have problems with there shed so make sure that both the eye caps and tip of the tail have come off. Retained eye caps can cause infections and eventually blindness. Shed left on the tail overtime can cause death of the tail effectively amputating the tail. Both problems can be solved by soaking the snake in warm water and gently rubbing the area with cotton wool this should only be done by a competent person. Handling your new snake : After giving your new snake a few days to settle in, begin to start handling it gently. It may feel threatened and move away from you, if the snake starts hissing and lashings its tail it is usually just a warning so be gentle and persistent. Over the next few weeks your snake will slowly learn to trust you, as confidence grows between you and your snake, you will be able to have it out of its viv for longer periods of time. But be warned snakes are notorious for escaping and will do so if given the opportunity. When handling your snake remember to avoid sudden movements, if the snake wraps around you, you can gently unwind it tail first. Do not try and unwind it head first as this will frighten it and may cause it to strike. If your snake is fed outside of its viv, once it had fed gently replace it and leave it for a couple of days because if nervous it will regurgitate the rat. List of required equipment for you and your snake : The requirements for owning different snakes will vary this is just a general list : Vivaruim Substrate Hide box Water bowl Greenery & branches Heating ( background & hot spot ) Feeding tongs Snake hook Suitable container for defrosting food Antibacterial solution e.g. 5% bleach solution ily solved with vet care.
