Snakes should be kept in a viverium of an appropriate size of the snake or the number being kept e.g. Hatchlings - Length 24 x width 12 x height 12 Adult - 36 x 18 x 24 Vivariums should contain either commercially prepared bark, astro turf or newspaper. Seder bark is not to be used as it is toxic and if you are using shavings or mulch it is not recommended to feed in the viv as ingestion could cause impaction. Temperatures : Daytime background temperature supplied by an under tank heat source should be between 80-85 degrees . Night time background temperature should be between 75-80 degrees. Hot spot temperature supplied at on end of the enclosure by either a ceramic bulb or basking light should be at a constant 95 degrees. Food : They will eat pre killed mice on a weekly or bi-monthly basis. In my opinion a general rule is to feed the snake a mouse the same diameter as your snake. Hatchling corns sometimes have problems feeding for the first few times so a method of braining is normally required to interest the snake in the mouse. Braining is done by exposing the brain of the mouse by removing the top of the head. Should this be unsuccessful introduction of a live food source may be required or further instruction from a competent person. Live food is a last resort as generally personates usually pays off. If you do introduce live food into the viv constant monitoring is required due to the fact that the live food could cause damage or even death to your snake. Please note that if your snake goes off its food it is more than likely to be due to it shedding. If you have any problems or questions please don t hesitate to contact me. www.snakes2go@hotmail.co.uk Common name : Corn snake Latin name : Elaphe guttata guttata Adult size : Between four to five feet although some may exceed this. Females generally being the larger of the two. Life span : Generally between 20-30 years is normal although there are records of captive raised snakes exceeding this. Eggs & young : Average between 10-30 eggs depending on the size of the female for example the larger the female the more eggs she will be able to produce. The eggs usually take between 80-100 days to hatch depending on a number of things such as a constant temperature of between 80-85 degrees. It is also common for a second clutch to follow later is the season this clutch is a lot smaller rarely containing more than four. Appearance of young : Young corns are generally between 10-14 inches in length and are available in many different morphs such as : amel, ghost, snow, caramel ect. Females generally have longer tales that taper more gradually to the tip as apposed to males that have shorter more taper tails. Probing by a competent person is the only way to correctly identify the sex of your snake. Ease of care : Ideal for beginners as they are normally very docile and will not grow as big as many other snakes available. Temperament : Manly very docile and shy but may become aggressive when threatened, in season or hungry. Vivarium set up : Corn snakes can be housed in large numbers in an appropriately sized ks which are easily solved with vet care. Respiritual diseases caused by insufficient heating and thermal burns caused by exposed surfaces such as unprotected bulbs. Activity period : Corn snakes like most snakes are nocturnal and will remain secluded in there hide box usually coming out at dusk to explore its viv and retreating to its hide at dawn. Shedding information : They occasionally have problems with there shed so make sure that both the eye caps and tip of the tail have come off. Retained eye caps can cause infections and eventually blindness. Shed left on the tail overtime can cause death of the tail effectively amputating the tail. Both problems can be solved by soaking the snake in warm water and gently rubbing the area with cotton wool this should only be done by a competent person. Handling your new snake : After giving your new snake a few days to settle in, begin to start handling it gently. It may feel threatened and move away from you, if the snake starts hissing and lashings its tail it is usually just a warning so be gentle and persistent. Over the next few weeks your snake will slowly learn to trust you, as confidence grows between you and your snake, you will be able to have it out of its viv for longer periods of time. But be warned snakes are notorious for escaping and will do so if given the opportunity. When handling your snake remember to avoid sudden movements, if the snake wraps around you, you can gently unwind it tail first. Do not try and unwind it head first as this will frighten it and may cause it to strike. If your snake is fed outside of its viv, once it had fed gently replace it and leave it for a couple of days because if nervous it will regurgitate the mouse. List of required equipment for you and your snake : The requirements for owning different snakes will vary this is just a general list : Vivaruim Substrate Hide box Water bowl Greenery & branches Heating ( background & hot spot ) Feeding tongs Snake hook Suitable container for defrosting food Antibacterial solution e.g. 5% bleach solution d with vet care. Respiritual diseases caused by insufficient heating and thermal burns caused by exposed surfaces such as unprotected bulbs.
