Vivarium set up : These snakes should be housed separately apart from when breeding. The vivarium should be of an appropriate size to soot your snake e.g. Hatchlings : length 24 x width 12 x height 18 Adults : 48 x 24 x 24 The viv should contain commercially prepared bark, astro turf or news paper. Seder chippings should not be used as it is toxic to animals. A hide box, large water bowl for pre shed soaking are essential as well as greenery and branches for climbing which are also recommended. Temperatures : Daytime back ground temperature 80-85 degrees Night time back ground temperature 70-75 degrees both of which are supplied by an under tank heat source. Hot spot temperature supplied at one end of the tank should be a constant 95 degrees supplied by either by ceramic bulb or basking lamp. Food : They will eat pre killed defrosted small rats or mice on a weekly or bi weekly basis. The food supplied should be the same diameter as the snake to avoid regurgitation. In my opinion snakes that are fed on rats generaly grow quicker and are healthier due to the higher nutritional content compared to mice. Snakes that refuse to feed need gentle persuasion and passions owing to the fact that in the wild they would have a varied diet including birds, small mammals, amphibians, lizards and other snakes. Common problems : Include mites and ticks which are easily solved with vet care. Respiritual diseases caused by insufficient heating and thermal burns caused by exposed surfaces such as unprotected bulbs. Activity period : Ball pythons like most snakes are nocturnal and will remain secluded in there hide box usually coming out at dusk to explore its viv and retreating to its hide at dawn. Found on the edges of forests on the ground and in trees. Adult size: Between 3-4 feet but have been recorded up to 6 feet in length. Females being larger than the males. Life span : Between 20-30 years but some have reached up to 48 years in captivity. Eggs & young : Averaging between 4-10 eggs in each clutch, usually taking around three months to hatch depending on the conditions e.g. sustained temperature. During this period the female sitting on the eggs will not leave or feed. Appearance of young : They are generally brightly colour stout snakes of which there are several morphs available such as, spider, cinnamon, pastel, ghost ect. Males in general are smaller than the females with larger spurs and smaller heads. Probing or popping is the only way to be a 100% sure on the sex of your snake both of which should only be done by a competent person to avoid damage. Ease of care : These snakes are generally very timid, docile snakes that are relatively easy for beginners to look after although you should take into consideration they do grow very quickly in to large snakes that weigh many pounds. Temperament : Usually docile and shy achieving the name balls because when threatened they curl up into a ball. They are also very curious and gentle snakes so make sure that both the eye caps and tip of the tail have come off. Retained eye caps can cause infections and eventually blindness. Shed left on the tail overtime can cause death of the tail effectively amputating the tail. Both problems can be solved by soaking the snake in warm water and gently rubbing the area with cotton wool this should only be done by a competent person. Handling your new snake : After giving your new snake a few days to settle in, begin to start handling it gently. It may feel threatened and move away from you, if the snake starts hissing and lashings its tail it is usually just a warning so be gentle and persistent. Over the next few weeks your snake will slowly learn to trust you, as confidence grows between you and your snake, you will be able to have it out of its viv for longer periods of time. But be warned snakes are notorious for escaping and will do so if given the opportunity. When handling your snake remember to avoid sudden movements, if the snake wraps around you, you can gently unwind it tail first. Do not try and unwind it head first as this will frighten it and may cause it to strike. If your snake is fed outside of its viv, once it had fed gently replace it and leave it for a couple of days because if nervous it will regurgitate the rat or mouse.
